Paver Green Density – A Crystal Ball for QC

Green Density Rig

Typically the paver manufacturer makes units and sends them to the lab for testing. On the rare occasion that the lab finds they do not meet spec the pavers are already made in quantity, perhaps sold, perhaps installed. Pavers are so over built that this is almost never a problem. But wouldn’t it be so much better if the

Green Density Rig

Funny Looking Crystal Ball

producer could consult a crystal ball and see test results of his pavers as they were being made? With this mystical power the issue with the production could be addressed right on the spot. If only there was such a power to see the future.

But wait, there’s more! That ability is available to mere mortals. It is green density testing done right at the machine as the units are made.

You’ve seen the cured density on every test report. 142 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) and kick butt compressive strength. Or on a bad day 132 PCF and a nasty fail on compressive strength. (Example numbers only, it always varies) With green density measurements at the machine you can know in advance what your cured unit density will be with very good certainty.  You get to peer into the future.  Very cool.

The set up is simple,a lab scale, water, and a rig to weigh the green unit in air and submerged. You could put it in a circus tent and have a mysterious gypsy woman do the test but this crystal ball doesn’t require those trappings. Just the determination to be a professional, quality, producer.

Sealers

Sealed Concrete Sample

Sealed Concrete Sample

ICT offers acrylic polymer and silane/siloxane sealers.   Both these water-based sealers offer effective protection for your concrete surfaces and masonry units.

Use our acrylic based sealers increased gloss is desirable.  By varying the application rate of our acrylic sealers you can adjust the gloss from very slight to semi-gloss.

We suggest avoiding heavy application rates in areas with foot or vehicular traffic.  Over application results in a finish may be high-gloss but it will not be durable.

It is best to use thinner applications allow the sealer to soak in without puddling on the surface.  The protection is locked into the concrete, not laying exposed on the surface of the concrete.

Particle Dispersants

Super Dispersant

Particle Clumping is Reduced for Improved Hydration

ICT Particle Dispersants are used in both zero-slump and wet-cast mix designs.  The chemical action is the same in both applications but the dose and the physical results are very different between these two mixes.

In wet-cast ICT “SD” products act as water-reducers and super-plasticizers.   In zero-slump the same exact same products could be more accurately described as water-increasers.

These opposite seeming properties are both the result of ICT dispersant’s ability to modify and enhance how water interacts with the cement, pigment, and aggregate particles in concrete.  They are both improve the physical properties of their respective mixes.  Yes, it can be confusing.

ICT will help you match the most beneficial “SD” product to your concrete mix.

Air-Entraining Agents for Concrete

Image182Air-Entraining Agent, or “AEA”, is used in poured concrete to cause the incorporation of very tiny air bubbles.  These are bubbles increase the concrete’s resistance to degradation caused by freeze and thaw cycles.

AEA is not effective in zero-slump concrete such as is used in interlocking concrete pavers, architectural block, or segmental retaining wall.  These mixes have to little water to effectively form the tiny bubbles (“good air”).

ICT’s AEA is used by our precast customers to increase the durability of their product.

Efflorescenc Control Agents (Admix)

Hydrophobic Concrete

Hydrophobic Concrete

ICT has a full line of Efflorescence Control Agents, or ECA’s.

Efflorescence is a harmless, but unattractive, white deposit that can form on any concrete.  It is the result of a reaction between water-soluble compounds in the concrete and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.  The water-soluble chemical is primarily calcium hydroxide, a normal left over from the hydration of cement.

The chemical reactions that dissolve and dissipate efflorescence are much slower than the reactions that me it in the first place. . If you were very very patient this “white bloom” will wash away in the rain.

ICT ECA’s help prevent or reduce the formation of efflorescence before it starts.  By controlling the movement of water through the concrete, the availability of the water-soluble compounds, and numerous other factors,  ICT ECA’s help to reduce and control efflorescence.

Winter’s Efflorescence Control Challenges

We should be leaving winter behind.  But all the CMUs that were put in the yard though the cold months are being shipped now.  With the proper precautions this doesn’t have to lead to efflorescence complaint calls.  (For those of you that stumbled upon this post CMUs are Concrete Masonry Units.  The target audience for this post is ICT’s customers and potential customers that operate plants that make CMUs.  CMUs include interlocking pavers, hardscape items like garden wall, outdoor fireplace and grill kits, patio stones, and large segmental retaining wall {SRW}.)

What goes wrong in the winter?  Cold batch temperatures.  If you are making concrete for a bridge you can bet DOT would be monitoring concrete and ambient temperatures very closely.  If minimum criterion are not met no concrete gets made.

It is easy to forget how important batch temperatures are in the CMU plant.  Water gets colder, aggregates going into the bins are very cold.

Once batch temperatures get down to 55 hydration chemistry starts to misbehave.  Parts of the chain of hydration reactions fail to do their job.  The part we worry about transforms efflorescence causing calcium hydroxide into hardened concrete.  There is always plenty of troublesome calcium hydroxide left over (about 10% of the weight of cement) but cold batch and curing temperatures can double the usual amount.

That causes trouble when winter production goes to the customer in the spring.

Energy is the answer in the form of heat.  Batch water can be heated to nearly boiling.  Aggregate bins should be topped off at end of shift and allowed to warm in the HEATED plant.  Aggregate bins can be steamed.  Stick a thermometer in the concrete and keep it 55F or warmer.  Keep curing chamber temps were they belong.  Best advice saved for last, use ICT admix.

A little heat will make sure your CMU’s get a warm reception this spring.

Regards,

Brent
