Air Entraining Agent

Air-Entraining Agents for Concrete

Image182Air-Entraining Agent, or “AEA”, is used in poured concrete to cause the incorporation of very tiny air bubbles.  These are bubbles increase the concrete’s resistance to degradation caused by freeze and thaw cycles.

AEA is not effective in zero-slump concrete such as is used in interlocking concrete pavers, architectural block, or segmental retaining wall.  These mixes have to little water to effectively form the tiny bubbles (“good air”).

ICT’s AEA is used by our precast customers to increase the durability of their product.

ConTec AE-407

DESCRIPTION

ConTec AE-407 is a liquid air-entraining admixture used to provide a suitable air-void system in concrete products. AE-407 is based on neutralized vinsol resin technology that is factory premixed into a ready to use solution for accurate dispensing.

APPLICATION

ConTec AE-407 may be used wherever the need for air-entrainment is required by specification. AE-80 meets ASTM C 260 requirements designed for use in low slump and precast products. Concrete durability research has established that proper air entrainment can reduce the effects of freeze thaw cycles in hardened concrete. AE-407 is effective and compatible with other admixtures in concrete. AE-407 can be useful in production of “Slump Block”.

PACKAGING

ConTec AE-407 is available in bulk quantities or packaged in 55 gallon (208 L) drums weighing 485 lbs (220 kg) and 265 gallon (1003 L) totes weighing 2400 lbs (1089 kg).

TYPICAL PROPERTIES

Specific Gravity at 77F…….…… ….. 1.01 – 1.02
Viscosity at 77F, cps ……….… …..…. 100 max
Weight per gallon …………………..…. ….8.4 – 8.5
% Volatile matter (NVM(1)) ……..……… …… ~ 85
Appearance ……….. . ….. Clear Amber Liquid

FEATURES / BENEFITS

● Improves workability and plasticity.
● Helps reduce bleeding, segregation and shrinkage in concrete.
● Improves resistance to freeze thaw cycles.
● Improves water permeability.
● Greatly improves the properties of precast concrete when used in conjunction with SR-550.

HANDLING / STORAGE

ConTec AE-407 can be stored over a wide range of temperatures but should not be allowed to freeze. Should AE-407 freeze, allow complete thawing before mixing by mechanical means. AE-407 has a minimum shelf like of 12 months. With proper storage conditions the shelf life can be greatly extended.

ADDITION RATES

The addition rates for AE-407 will vary depending on the mount of air needed for a given job condition. The components of mix design along with temperature are typical factors that effect the amount of AE-407 required. Consult your ICT representative for assistance.
