Aggregate characteristics vary more than any other ingredient in a mix design. and are a major influence on product quality and manufacturing efficiency. While area availability is key to delivered pricing, the lowest cost material may cost you more “up-stream”. Interestingly, the inverse can be true whereas the best quality blend of materials (on paper) might not be ideal for the application.
Problems with mold fill, compaction, green strength/cohesion, and chipping can be very expensive – especially when using cement as the “band-aid”!
Some key considerations include:
- Individual and composite gradation
- Particle shape and surface texture
- Pan fines content
